              Periodontal (Gum Disease) Care

              Periodontal Disease

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Periodontal Disease is a disease that attacks the gums and bone which support your teeth. Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t even know it! Most people are not aware of it because this disease is usually painless in the early stages. Not only is periodontal disease the #1 reason for tooth loss, but medical research also suggests that there is a link between periodontal disease and more severe diseases such as diabetes, strokes, bacterial pneumonia, and cardiovascular disease. Smoking is also linked to increasing the risk of periodontal disease.

              • Bleeding Gums
              • Loose Teeth
              • New Spacing Between Teeth
              • Persistent Bad Breath
              • Pus Around the Teeth and Gums
              • Receding Gums - Loss of gum tissue around the tooth.
              • Red and Puffy Gums
              • Tenderness or Discomfort of the gums & teeth.

Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease or treating it in early stages, preventing advanced Periodontitis.

              Diagnosis and Treatment:

Dr. Garcia and his Exceptional Hygiene Specialists routinely include a Comprehensive Periodontal Examination as part of your regular dental check-up and cleaning appointment. This detailed Periodontal Examination consists of gently probing to measure the sulcus (pocket or space) between each tooth and the gum tissue surrounding it. The depth of a healthy sulcus measures 3mm or less and does not bleed. The depth of an unhealthy or diseased sulcus (pocket) measures higher than 3mm, contains bleeding and inflammation associated with gingivitis, and tooth mobility associated with advanced periodontitis.

To determine if you have periodontal disease or to determine the severity of your periodontal condition, call today to schedule your appointment with our professional Dr. and staff. At Garcia Dental Care you will receive the BEST treatment possible in treating, restoring and maintaining your dentition to a healthy state, and preventing this disease from progressing.

              Cosmetic (Fillings, Veneers & Whitening)

              Mercury Free Fillings

Amalgam is a material commonly known as the 'SILVER FILLING " material for teeth. It contains the toxic metal ~ Mercury. Mercury has been proven to be toxic and unsafe. So why is it still being placed in patient's mouths today? Amalgam/Silver fillings are less expensive, which can appeal to some patients. Although it is still legal to use mercury in dentistry, The Environmental Protection Agency has noted mercury to be a TOXIC POISON.

For the health and safety of his patients, Dr. Garcia practices Mercury Free Dentistry by using tooth-colored composite/porcelain fillings instead of amalgam/silver fillings, providing you with a more natural looking, beautiful restoration!!

              Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile. Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.

The most popular method is using a home teeth whitening system or In-Office method that will whiten teeth dramatically. Since teeth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Teeth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

              Reasons for teeth whitening:

              • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
              • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
              • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
              • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

              What does teeth whitening involve?

              Take Home System:

This type of teeth whitening usually requires two visits. At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays. At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary. The trays are worn with special whitening solution either twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight for a couple of weeks depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening.

It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching. You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays, and be encouraged to visit your dentist regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.

              In-Office System:

As for this system it only takes a one hour appointment to achieve the best results. Our office uses one of the best whitening systems up to date. Patients who have tried this system have got a 3-4 shade difference in a matter of 40 minutes!

Opalescence Boost is a chemically activated power whitening gel that provides brighter, whiter teeth after just 40 minutes in the dental chair. The powerful 40% hydrogen peroxide gel is chemically activated, so it doesn’t require a hot, uncomfortable light to work. Using the unique double-syringe configuration, the clinician activates the 40% hydrogen peroxide formula just prior to application, ensuring every dose of Opalescence Boost is fresh and effective.

Opalescence tooth whitening gel contains PF (potassium nitrate and fluoride). Potassium nitrate has been shown to help reduce sensitivity. Fluoride has been shown to help reduce cavities and strengthen enamel. Together they help to improve the overall health of the teeth.
              Dental Implants

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically implanted into your jawbone to hold a replacement tooth, bridge, or denture. Dental implants not only help preserve your bone structure, but they also look, feel, and function most like your natural teeth.

Replacing your missing teeth and attaining the Smile you’ve always wanted is possible, and Dental implants are frequently the best treatment option available.

Teeth Replacement is not only important to look and feel better, but is extremely important to restore your ability to Eat Properly, Speak Clearly, and Smile Confidently!

When a tooth is not replaced, the remaining teeth can drift out of position and change the bite. This can lead to problems affecting your Temporal Mandibular Joint, cavities, gum disease, difficulty with chewing and eating resulting in medical problems affecting your stomach and overall digestive system.

In addition, multiple missing teeth can result in drastic facial changes where the face collapses in appearance, the lips become thin and flattened, the chin moves forward and upward and appears pointed. The mouth looses its shape, and cheek pouches become pronounced on either side of the lower jaw sometimes forming cracks or sores at the corners of the mouth.

Dr. Garcia will help restore the Confidence in you by permanently replacing your missing teeth and giving you the Smile you've always wanted! Dr. Garcia will consider your unique wants and needs depending on your individual circumstances, to help you to receive the BEST option available in replacing any missing teeth.

              Endodontics (Root Canals)

              Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy can be performed to save a tooth that has been traumatized, injured or has a diseased nerve due to severe tooth decay. Inside the crown and roots of each tooth, lies a soft tissue (pulp)/ nerve which provides nutrients and feeling to the tooth.

When this area becomes diseased or injured, the pulp tissue surrounding the nerve and the nerve itself becomes infected and abscessed which can be extremely painful. With Root Canal Therapy, Dr. Garcia can provide you with immediate relief and can save the injured/infected tooth from having to be extracted.

This procedure involves removing the infected pulp nerve of the tooth, then sanitizing and properly sealing off the canals to prevent further infection from occurring. A Crown is then placed over that tooth to fully protect and restore it. Most of the time, a root canal is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort. Best of all, it can save your teeth and your smile!

              Crowns (Same Day) & Bridge

              Same Day Crowns

Dr. Garcia has the most current and Advanced Technology to meet his patient’s needs. Our office has the latest and best technology using a computerized laser system called the E4D digital impression system to fabricate crowns, veneers, bridges, inlay and onlay restorations.

Digital Impressions are More Precise & More Comfortable than Traditional Impressions and allows us to accurately design your crowns or veneers in our office and conveniently place your permanent crowns or veneers on the same day! This means no need for temporaries for several weeks and no need for another appointment to get your permanent restoration placed.

The E4D CAD/CAM computer system has remarkably accurate software and hardware for the best fitting, and strongest porcelain crown using a solid ceramic block called EMAX.

EMax looks just like your natural tooth and is 3 times stronger than natural enamel. EMax crowns are ideal; metal free, solutions to protect and restore teeth that are damaged, have large fillings, or are worn or cracked.

              Porcelain Veneers

EMax veneers are perfect for instant smile makeovers to correct unique problems such as:

              • Gaps in Your Smile
              • Broken or Chipped Teeth
              • Discolored Teeth
              • Worn or Stained Teeth

With E4D, we can prepare, design, and make veneers on the same day for instant smile makeovers. Porcelain veneers are custom-made shells of porcelain that can be bonded to the front sides of your teeth to provide a beautiful new smile with minimal removal of your natural tooth. Emax is Long-lasting and natural looking giving you the Beautiful Smile you Want!

              Dentures (Full & Partial)

              Partials & Dentures

A removable partial usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored base, which is sometimes connected by metal framework that holds the partial in place in the mouth. Partial dentures are used to replace one or more teeth while anchoring to the remaining natural teeth. A denture replaces all missing teeth.

              Oral Surgery

Oral Surgery: Extractions & Bone Grafting

Dr. Garcia is Extremely Gentle and well in tune to his patients comfort level while providing the best treatments available. Dr. Garcia has extensive experience performing routine extractions, Root Tip Extractions, Surgical Extractions, and removal of Partial-Boney Impacted teeth.

After a tooth is extracted, the bony socket will heal with a variable amount of resorption or "melting away." This results in low quality and quantity of bone, limiting the option to place dental implants.

A Bone Graft to the socket at the time of extraction helps preserve the bone, which will increase the success for the placement of a dental implant and can improve the fit and appearance of a traditional bridge.

              What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea??

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person's breathing is interrupted during sleep. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times per night. This means the brain--and the rest of the body--may not get enough oxygen.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea - is The more common of the two forms of apnea, it is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat and/or tongue, collapses during sleep. People with sleep apnea may snore loudly and stop breathing for short periods of time. When the blood-oxygen level drops low enough, the body momentarily wakes up. It can happen so fast that you may not be aware you woke up. This can happen hundreds of times a night, and you may wake up in the morning feeling unrefreshed.

              Screening & for OSA

              CBCT/SCAN

The use of State of the Art Screening using CBCT 3-D X-Ray technology can analyze and measure several anatomical structures of the upper airway such as:
              • Airway Volume
              • Jaw Position
              • Sinus/Nasal Passages
              • Pathological Obstructions
              • Tongue Size/Position
              • Soft Palate Size
In addition to the CBCT 3-D Imaging system, Dr. Garcia includes Obstructive Sleep Apnea Screenings in his dental exams, evaluating risks based on the size of the tongue, airway, tonsils, and positioning of the jaw, all of which play a factor in OSA. The use of Sleep questionnaires with Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Malampatti to help further evaluate risks which help Dr. Garcia determine if the patient is a candidate for further testing.

Getting Tested & Diagnosed for OSA

Dr. Garcia has implemented the ARES Home Sleep Study Device in his office, which is used in collaboration with a BOARD CERTIFIED SLEEP PHYSICIAN who interprets and diagnosis the data collected from the ARES to properly diagnose and treat the patients condition.

THE ARES- COMPREHENSIVE HOME SLEEP STUDY

The ARES (Apnea Risk Evaluation System) ~ Home Sleep Study is approved by the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and has been cleared for use by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The ARES - offers a comprehensive sleep study which is easy to use and available in the comfort of your own home.

ARES Unicorder is a computerized device used with a canula, sensors and electrodes that record: Breathing Disorder Events, Blood Oxygen Saturation, Pulse Rate, Sleep (Awake/Arousal data, REM & Non-REM Sleep Data, Snoring Levels, and Head Position. All of this data is analyzed by a Sleep Technician and interpreted by a Boarded Sleep Specialist. A report with the Sleep Study findings and Treatment Considerations is then sent to Dr Garcia for review with patient.

              Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Once diagnosed with OSA, there are different treatment considerations that are recommended by the Sleep Physician depending on the severity.

Oral Appliance Therapy ~ Recommended for Mild to Moderate OSA

Dr. Garcia offers Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) using Oral Appliance Therapy, which is custom fitted to be worn in the mouth at night and is approved by the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Oral Appliance Therapy is a wonderful treatment option for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, and is an alternative treatment option for patients prescribed CPAP Therapy and who cannot tolerate CPAP treatment.

CPAP Therapy ~ Typically Recommended for Moderate to Severe OSA

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) blows air down your throat at night to keep your airways open while you sleep. The treatment is done using a CPAP machine, which consists of a mask, motor, and tubing. While CPAP is considered to be the "Gold Standard" of treatment for OSA, many patients who are prescribed the apparatus do not comply or simply cannot tolerate CPAP Therapy; Therefore, Oral Appliance Therapy may be an alternative option in receiving treatment.
              TMJ

              TMJ Treatment

              TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDER (TMJ/TMD)

More than 15 percent of American adults suffer from temporal mandibular joint pain, earaches, or chronic facial head and neck pain. The source of these aches and pains may be related to TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder).

TMD affects the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joints), which are the 2 joints located on each side of the head that work together with a complex system of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones, to make different movements for chewing and speaking.

People with TMD may experience symptoms that include:

              • Chronic Head & Neck Pain
              • Jaw-Joint Pain
              • Clicking and Popping of Jaw-Joint
              • Pain in or around the ear
              • Difficulty opening & Closing the mouth
              • Tenderness of the jaw or jaw muscles
              • Sensitive Teeth when no other dental problems can be found
              • Grinding down teeth also known as Bruxism
              • Jaw pain more prevalent in the morning or late afternoon

TMD can result from a number of causes such as

              • Arthritis
              • Improper bite (how teeth fit together)
              • Jaw dislocation or injury
              • the overuse of jaw muscles due to bruxism

              DIAGNOIS OF TMJ

With our advanced State of the Art X-Rays, Dr. Garcia can evaluate the health of the temporal mandibular joint based on its shape and position. He can compare images to those of an ideal joint position, and shape to assess the severity of the condition. Based on the image findings and the severity of symptoms, the proper treatment can be recommended.

TREATMENT OF TMJ-WITH ORAL APPLIANCE THERAPY

There are many treatment options to manage TMD, including oral appliances, surgeries, medications, or lifestyle changes such as change in diet. Custom Oral Appliances such as splints are made for each patient and can be effective in reducing the wear and tear on teeth and alleviating pressure from the joint by helping to evenly distribute the bite.
